BRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. — An autistic boy is discovered standing in the middle of a busy road, on his way to the beach. A young girl with autism outsmarts a number of locks, leaves the house before her mother wakes up and is found, naked but alive, in a neighbor’s pool.

At a recent training for police officers here, both cases illustrated the often delicate task of dealing with people who suffer from autism, a devastating neurological disorder that often strikes in childhood and that impairs one’s ability to communicate and to relate to others.

Note: This story was received a while ago, though we haven’t had time to publish it (more pressing issues.) This was published in the UDJ about a week after it was submitted.

I was wondering why the MTA does not operate the day after Thanksgiving. There are many citizens of Ukiah and Mendocino County that do not drive, do not have a vehicle and don’t have friends or family that will transport them to place they need to go. They depend on the MTA or Dial-A-Ride. Thursday was Thanksgiving, and I can see them not wanting to provide service, but what about the person that wants to go out to dinner as they have no place to go.

I just received word from the State Council on Developmental Disabilities that some major progress has been made on the recommendations. Assembly Member Jim Beall Jr. has asked the State Council as well as Protection and Advocacy Inc to be chief co-sponsors of the bill. Mr. Beall is very committed to being the Author of legislation that we will introduce early next year, likely in January. Everyone will need our enthusiasm and support to see the bill pass the legislature and go to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

Next Steps- The SCDD is starting to meet with some stakeholder groups on the concepts of the legislation. Drafted legislation will be finished in early January and work with Mr. Beall’s staff to introduce the bill in January or early February. We hope to have the language ready for the January 15, 16 State Council Meeting in Sacramento.

Detailed below is a list of major points the drafted legislation will cover.

Barack Obama has released a statement regarding his support of people with disabilities. While it does have some issues that could lead to backing out later, it seems pretty solid in his support of current legislation.

He outlines educational, equal opportunity in employment, increasing employment rates and independent/community living.

His current plan can be found here: Disability Plan Fact Sheet

His archived plan (2007-12-19) can be found here: Fact Sheet

Assembly Member Julia Brownley (Santa Monica) will amend one of her two year bills,
namely AB 851, to continue her leadership goal to improve Medi-Cal’s California Working Disabled Program (CWD). The amended bill will directly address the “drafting error” mentioned in the Governor’s veto message of AB 1113. It will include the AB 1113 improvements in the vetoed bill.

AB 851 to improve Medi-Cal for the Working Disabled needs support and your help.

All ASSEMBLY Committee and Assembly floor votes on AB 851 must be complete by the end of January, 2008.

Please click on the story’s title to get the whole action alert.
