About

NorCal Disability was born out of necessity in late 2006 after there was no quick and easy place to get news regarding happenings throughout the area (originally Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake and Mendocino Counties). These were issues such as legislation, local advocacy efforts, calls for action as well as general information about the world around that were buried in hard to find places and not easily found via the world wide web.

NorCal Disability aimed to fill this niche by providing aggregated information from many different sources to paint a larger picture about the world surrounding disabilities. These included advocacy efforts by organizations such as: CDCAN, PAI, Area 1 Board on Developmental Disabilities, Redwood Coast Regional Center, People First of California are few to be named among many organizations.

While NorCal Disability has seen its share of growing pains, it has most recently grown out of its biggest yet, which was making the information more accessible to the masses via the “Tagging” technologies and multi-categorization. We have yet to finish importing old information into the site (as it’s cumbersome as the data must be created from scratch on each article in the old software).

Being a little more than a year and a half old, NorCal Disability now boasts around 45,000 page views per month. (Note: Hits are a much inflated number of the number of page views as hits also include graphics downloaded; page views are purely the number of web pages served.) After being a part of many meetings held by the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities regarding current and future legislation, NorCal Disability has been recognized statewide by many advocacy organizations as a formidable advocate for people with disabilities.
